Career

After receiving his Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1990, Professor Hassan joined the Department of Economics and Finance at the University of New Orleans. He has continued to be a finance professor there since and the institution granted him two endowed chair positions for his research and teaching work: Hibernia Professor of Economics and Finance and Bank One Professor in Business.
He has also done consulting work as an economist for the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, African Development Bank, Transparency International-Bangladesh (TIB), Islamic Development Bank, Government of Turkey and many private organizations.
Professor Hassan has also worked significantly with doctoral students in the Finance and Economics field. He has supervised forty-five theses at the University of New Orleans. In addition, he externally examined fifty-three dissertations from countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Bangladesh, and Malaysia. He previously held visiting Chair Professor positions in Malaysia, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia.
He has lead various professional academic organizations:
